Dream Big, Read!

The theme for the Summer Reading Program at the South Georgia Regional Library this year is Dream “Big—Read!.” The theme explores the night-time connections to reading for all-ages from parents reading to their children early on to teens & adults staying up late into the night to finish the books they are engaged in. Participants in this year’s  Summer Reading Program will be invited to go on explorations as far away as the outer reaches of space to as close to home as their own personal dreams and wishes and recognizing the nocturnal life in your own backyard.

HOW TO REGISTER

Registering for the Summer Reading Program is easy.  Bring your library card to any of the six South Georgia Regional Library branches and fill out a registration form.  When you sign up you will receive a reading log and incentive card.

TICKETS & INCENTIVE CARDS

For every completed reading log you turn in, you will receive a ticket for the grand prize drawing to be held on August 4th at the Valdosta-Lowndes County Public Library during the annual Summer Celebration.  You can also earn small prizes along the way.  For up to the first five logs you turn in you will get a “surprise” out of the prize box, as well as coupons and other incentives.  You must have your incentive card with you in order to get your prize, so please keep track of your card!

PRIZES

This year we have many exciting prizes to offer participants of the Summer Reading Program. A sampling of System-wide Prizes to be offered this year include: a Nintendo Wii for Children, and Xbox Kinect for Teens, and a Kindle Fire tablet for Adults, as well as tickets to Wild Adventures and more at the branch level! Prizes will be given out on August 4 from 2 to 4pm at the Summer Celebration to be held at the Valdosta-Lowndes County Public Library.

Summer Reading Program Kickoff Party w/Magician Bill Backard

(Wednesday, May 30th and Thursday, May 31st at all branches)
Magician and storyteller Bill Packard will be returning to the South Georgia Regional Library for a magical performance and story that will be sure to help everyone Dream Big!

Nocturnal Animal Encounter, with Jay Whitesell

Join Jay Whitesell and Lucky the Owl for a presentation on creatures of the night!  This program will feature a real, live owl, so please leave your pet mice at home!

Dance Imagination & Pee-Wee Hip Hop (Valdosta-Lowndes County Public Library)

Sometimes you’ve just got to shake it!  The South Georgia Regional Library will be encouraging kids to learn and then show us their dance moves in two different dance themed events, so come on down and show us what you’ve got!

Little Actor’s Theatre Presents Stellaluna (Valdosta-Lowndes County Public Library)

The Little Actors Theater will be performing Stellaluna, a play adapted from the children’s book of the same name.  Come to the library to join our adventure about a bat raised by birds in this by kids for kids production!

One Heart Music and Stories, with Sam & Sallie Worley
(Wednesday, June 27th and Thursday, June 28th at all branches)

One Heart Music and Stories will be coming to your neighborhood library to present their summer performance, Night Sparkle Extravaganza!  Their show will have puppets, live music, and an original story designed to encourage everyone to Dream Big, Read!

Teens & Adults

Digital Photography Workshop w/ Shain Petty

Shain Petty, a local professional photographer, will demonstrate how to use the settings on digital cameras to add spice to your photos.

Kindle Tips & Tricks (Introduction to eReaders)

An introduction to e-readers as well as a step-by-step lesson on how to search for and download free eBooks to a Kindle using your library card and the OverDrive eBook service.

Introduction to Candle-Making Workshop

Come to the library to learn how to make your own candles!  This hands on activity will guide you through making candles, provide examples of different types of handmade candles, and let you take what you make with you when you're done! Space is limited so don't forget to sign up!

Make Your Own Bath Salts Workshop

Come to the library to hear about the benefits of bath salts and learn how to make your own!  Teens and adults of all ages will appreciate this fast, fun and simple project!
